Stabat Mater and other Sacred Arias

Stabat Mater and other Sacred Arias

In 1736, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater became the most popular piece of sacred music ever written—so popular that J.S. Bach put the text of a German psalm under the original music, changed a few notes, and so brought Pergolesi’s masterwork to his native Germany. On January 28 and 29, Musica Angelica presents Bach’s version of Stabat Mater and other sacred arias from Händel’s oratorio, Solomon and Theodora, featuring the extraordinary voices of soprano Dame Emma Kirkby (one of the world’s most celebrated early music specialists) and countertenor Daniel Taylor (returning from his magnificent Musica Angelica debut last season). Martin Haselböck conducts.
