Michael Dean, Bass-baritone

Michael Dean, Bass-Baritone American bass-baritone Michael Dean has performed to great acclaim worldwide in both concert and operatic repertoire, appearing with many of the leading opera houses and orchestras of the U.S. and Europe. He has made frequent appearances at New York City Opera, where he has performed in The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Of Mice and Men, Il Viaggio a Reims, and The Magic Flute. He appeared in the Live From Lincoln Center broadcast of Lizzie Borden; Don Giovanni and Silva in Ernani in Linz, Austria; Figaro in Antwerp; and La Bohème in Strasbourg and Berlin.

Mr. Dean has also received critical praise for his numerous recordings of baroque opera, including Agrippina, Ottone, Radamisto, Giustino, and Serse. His recording of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas was hailed as “a performance to treasure” and “one of the most beautifully sung Aeneases on disc.” He has performed with many of the world’s top baroque conductors, including Nicholas McGegan, Helmut Rilling, Martin Pearlman, Bernard Labadie, and Bruno Weil. He is a frequent guest at the Carmel Bach Festival, where he has performed Bach’s Mass in B minor, St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Mr. Dean’s other recent engagements included performances at Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, The Kennedy Center, and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as appearances with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Boston Baroque, Baltimore Symphony, Houston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

This season he appears in Handel’s Messiah with the symphonies of Houston, Pittsburgh, and Monterey; Verdi’s Requiem with the Richmond Symphony; Haydn’s Creation and Brahms’ Requiem in New Orleans; and a gala concert with Les Violons du Roy in Montreal.
