"Among the new releases on the CD market, as so often, the works of Georg Friedrich Handel enjoy special popularity. A whole number of new complete recordings have just come on the market. Among them, perhaps the most consistent quality is offered in Martin Haselböck’s interpretation of “Acis and Galatea”. Of the three greatly differing editions that Handel made of the work, Haselböck chose the second, from 1718, which the composer wrote as a “pastoral entertainment” during his tenure as “composer in residence” to the Duke of Cannon. Its intimate character receives an exemplary realization in the chamber music-like clarity of the performance by the Music Angelica Baroque Orchestra: transparent, full of atmosphere, elegant. A decisive part in this is played by the young, fresh voices; in particular, Linda Perillo and Mark Bleeke create a genuinely lyrical atmosphere as the youthful lovers. Other roles are strongly cast with Florian Boesch and William Hite."
